25 Netflix Tips, Tricks, and Hacks to Make the Most Out of Your Subscription

Reading time: 10 minutes

It’s difficult to remember how our life was before Netflix. The boredom of Sunday afternoons, the spasmodic rant for really good movies to watch on streaming on a Wednesday evening, all paired with clicks on scammy websites and annoying ads only to discover that the link was not valid anymore.

We’ve all been there long enough to realize how Netflix has made the way we consume media far more convenient than it used to be before. But just like everything good, there’s always room for improvement. You might have thought you were making the most out of your Netflix subscription, only to realize then that the list of tricks, tips, and hacks you can test is longer than your last binging session.

For this reason, we gathered all the tips you can follow to make your next movie experience on Netflix even more pleasurable and memorable.

Ready to get pro?

Let’s jump straight to our list!

1. Customize Your Subtitles

If you’re used to watching movies in your mother tongue, you might not have thought of subtitles that much before. The trick is that Netflix not only allows you to enable or disable subtitles, captions, and alternate audio for many movies. They also let you change your subtitles’ appearance, from font style to size, and shadows, too.

All movie lovers will tell you how different original and dubbed movies can be. To get the most out of your favorite movies, there’s nothing better than listening to your favorite actor’s voice and yet understanding what’s going on in the scenes, thanks to subtitles.

To customize your subtitles, click on “Account” and then pick “Subtitle appearance” under the “My Profile” category. You’ll then be ready to soak up all the cultural hints in your favorite foreign movies without sacrificing your viewing experience.

2. Transform Each Movie into a Podcast or an Audio Book

We all wish we could have hours of free time to binge-watch our favorite movies every time we feel like it. However, more often than ever, life gets in the way, and we have things to do. Activities that require us to move around, like exercising, house cleaning, grocery shopping. You name it.

Luckily, you can still watch movies while doing all of this. To be more precise, you can listen to videos by selecting “Audio Description.” Hit the subtitles icon on the utility bar, move over to the audio tab, and choose this option to hear a narrator describing the actions happening on the screen, including facial expressions, physical activities, and scene changes.

This feature is now available on over 975 titles, and it is not only a life-saver for higher convenience. It also makes Netflix movies more accessible to those of us who are blind or visually impaired.

3. Become a Beta Tester of New Features

We did our best to sum up, all the most exciting features Netflix has to offer to its subscribers. However, things can change very quickly, and new features are added at light speed.

If you love being on the cutting edge of new features and want to make everyone’s experience better, you can opt-in to the testing they are doing before these changes become public. All you need to do is go to “Account”>> “Settings”>> “Test Participation”. You’ll officially become one of the bravest Netflix explorers, something you can brag about with your circle of friends.

4. Make Sure You’re Optimizing for HD

With a Netflix subscription, you’re paying for HD movie streaming on the go. However, many of us forget this detail and keep watching movies at terrible resolutions.

Check your streaming settings by going to “Netflix.com/HdToggle” and selecting “High.” You can make sure you’re always set up for HD viewing. You can also modify the resolution of what you’re watching by going to “Your Account”>> “Playback Settings”>> “Data Usage”>> “High”>> “Save.” Just remember that HD videos use up more data, so you’ll be better to watch them only inside of Wi-Fi zones.

5. Check, Edit, and Delete Your Netflix Watch History

We all have movies we feel guilty about watching. You might want your next date, family members, or anyone else to know about the latest trash movie you watched. Or you simply don’t want Netflix to mess up your movie recommendations only for a slip or two.

You can delete items from your viewing history by logging into your Netflix account, going to “Account”>> “Viewing Activity.” You can then click the circle icon on the right and delete your more embarrassing selections. If you want to clean everything up, you can even scroll to the bottom and click “Hide All.” Otherwise, you can also download your entire viewing history to bring back some memories of the past and take stock of your life.

6. Request New Titles

What if you can’t find a title you’re dying to watch? Netflix is continuously looking for new content to add to their movie selection.

If you have any titles in mind that you would like to recommend, you can fill out the online request form at this address (“Request TV Shows Or Movies”) and tell Netflix about the movie you’re hoping to see. You can request up to three titles at a time! Hooray!

Of course, there’s no guarantee they’ll act on your requests, but you’ve tried at least…

7. Learn All The Common Keyboard Shortcuts

If you’re a fan of keyboard shortcuts, Netflix has you covered. We have listed here below a few of the most common Netflix keyboard shortcuts to streamline your viewing experience and make your binging even more efficient:

  • Space/Enter: Play/Pause
  • PgUp: Play (for PC only)
  • PGDn: Pause (for PC only)
  • F: Fullscreen
  • Esc: Exit fullscreen
  • Shift + Left arrow: Rewind
  • Shift + Right arrow: Fast forward
  • Up arrow: Volume up
  • Down arrow: Volume down
  • M: Mute on/off

8. Set a Sleep Timer

Did you know that you can set Netflix to automatically pause when you fall asleep? We know, it sounds like witchcraft. However, Netflix devised a pair of socks with a sleep detection system based on an activity-monitoring method known as actigraphy. In other words, if Netflix notices that you have stopped moving for a prolonged period, it will automatically pause the TV to ensure that you’re not woken up by spoilers.

9. Download Cool Movies to Watch Them When You’re Offline

You’re waiting in line or at the bus station. Time is passing so slow that you would wish you could log into your Netflix account and watch a movie while waiting. However, you know that this will eat your monthly data.

There’s a solution to this problem. You can download select movies and take some of your queue without worrying whether you will be able to log into a Wi-Fi connection. The downloading process can take a bit of time and storage space, but soon you’ll be having a good selection of great movies to watch on the go.

To download a movie, click on the “Available for Download” category under the menu option or look for the download icon close to a specific title. You’ll also be ready to binge-watch the movies you love on your next cross-country flight or whenever you’re offline.

10. Unlock Hidden Categories With Genre Codes

We can all agree that Netflix does a great job in movie selection, but has massive room for improvement in sorting movies. You might have to spend an hour searching through its lengthy list of genres and categories only to find a more exciting movie than the classic romantic comedy or action Hollywood title.

There’s a solution to this problem, too. Netflix has set up hundreds of unique codes that will take you to a menu showing every movie associated with that genre. All you need to do is log into your Netflix account and enter “www.netflix.com/browse/genre/XXXX” into your browser’s toolbar. You can then paste one of the many four-digit genre codes in the “XXXX” field to unlock a slew of secret titles.

Here you can find the full list of Netflix genre codes. Happy bingeing!

11. Kick People Off Your Netflix Account

If you’ve shared your Netflix password with your social circle and all your former flames, it’s probably time to kick them out of your account. In such situations, changing the password is often not enough.

That’s why you can consider banning them all from your subscription by going to “My Account”>> “Sign out of all devices.”

Congratulations! You’ve now finally logged your ex out of your account once and for all.

12. Rely on Different Profiles for Better Recommendations

We all know Netflix’s recommendation algorithm is far from perfect – that’s why we have created Movvio. But by watching all genres with only one profile, you’re making way harder to find reliable movie recommendations within a reasonable time.

This is especially true if more than one person uses the same Netflix account, which means that interests will get mixed and the recommendation process will become even more confusing. To ensure that each user has the most personalized experience, you can create different profiles for different people or different moods you’re in. You’ll then be asked to pick which profile you want to use right at the time you sign on your Netflix account.

To add more profiles, click your name on the top right of Netflix, then select “Account”>> “My Profile”>> “Manage Profiles.” There you’ll be able to edit, delete, or add new profiles as you wish.

13. Sort Your Queue

The recommendations shown by Netflix in the My List section of your library can be helpful, but sometimes they don’t match your real interests. For this reason, you can take a more hand-curated approach by organizing My List based on what you want to watch.

To do so, go to the My Account tab in the upper-right hand corner, scroll down to “My Profile,” and then go to the “Order In My List” link.

14. Watch Netflix at Weird Times for Better Video Quality

This trick shows that being mainstream is not always the best choice. According to a Digital Trends report, you can improve your video quality by streaming movies on Netflix during off-peak hours, like early in the morning or late at night.

Their study found that video quality and speed improved significantly during hours when fewer people were logged into their Netflix accounts. Finally, a legit excuse to stay up all night watching all the movies in your to-watch list.

You can find a list of minor but yet memorable tricks to use during your next Netflix binging experience.

15. Sort Movies Chronologically or Alphabetically

If you thought you could only sort Netflix movies by genre, think again. All you need to do is to open a category page, like, for example, comedy or documentary. Then click on the small box with four dots on the upper right-hand side of the page, and a dropdown menu will appear with the option to sort movies alphabetically or by year of their release.

16. Not All Browsers Are Made Equal

You might have thought that the browser you pick for watching your Netflix videos doesn’t matter that much. After all, all browsers do kind of the same things. However, your browser’s choice can play a big part in determining how detailed your video looks.

The streaming resolution on Firefox, Opera, and Chrome is limited to 720p, while Internet Explorer and Safari offer a sharper 1080p streaming. And you even though Internet Explorer was dead!

17. Pick Movies Through Voice Control

If you have Google Home and want to watch a movie without having to lift a finger, we have great news. You can use your voice to control Netflix with Google’s smart speaker through a Chromecast that is plugged into your telly.

You will only need to go into the Google Home app >> “Menu”>> “Google Assistant”>> “More Settings”>> “Videos and Photos,” where you can link Netflix to your Google Home.

18. Host an Oscars Party Whenever You Feel Like it

Sometimes you just don’t feel like browsing for hours to find a nice movie to watch. That’s when you can head straight to the award winners.

Check out the Oscar Winners and Recent Nominees section on Netflix. It’s broken down by genres and popularity. You can even see which ones are already on your list.

19. Rate Everything You Watch for Better Recommendations

Remember that movie you watched only because your friends forced you to go through it till the end? You probably didn’t like it, and yet for Netflix, it sounds like you are a potential candidate for similar movies.

The only way for you to put an end to this deadly circle of terrible recommendations is to rate everything you watch. When Netflix knows you hated the movie you just watched, you should be able to reduce the likelihood of seeing similar movie recommendations popping up in your account’s home page.

20. Say Good-bye to Buffering

Buffering is one of the bingers’ worst nightmares. You pick the best movie to watch on Netflix, and the climax is snarled by excessive loading. What could sound worse than that?

If you are logged into your Netflix account from a computer, hold down Shift+Opt (Shift+Alt for Windows), and then left-click to open up a hidden menu called the “Stream Manager.” This menu will contain a list of buffering fixes and other streaming options.

If you are using Chrome, you can press Ctrl+Shift+Alt/Opt+S to access this same menu. You can try this trick first and thank us later.

21. Watch Other Countries’ Netflix Movies With an Unblocker

The online world is filled with unblockers like Smartflix to trick Netflix into thinking you are in another country and granting you access to hundreds of new titles. Another method you can use is relying on a VPN, which works in kind of the same way.

The rule of thumb is not to abuse this type of tool, considering that while this trick sounds very appealing, it is also against Netflix’s terms of service. So unblock at your own risk.

22. Binge With Friends

Sometimes you don’t want to binge-watch movies alone, especially after the recent epidemic. You can use the video-chat service Rabbit or Zoom to binge movies with friends, wherever you are.

You can launch a window that can be viewed by all the parties in the chat, and which you can use to stream your favorite movies. Not to mention that besides bingeing together, you can also share real-time messages and trash-talk everything that it’s on your mind while watching the same movie.

23. Put Your Account on Hold

Netflix’s subscription fee is often quite affordable, considering the deep library of movies you can access. However, you might have to spend more time outdoors or leave for your next vacation. Will you lose time from your subscription? You might if you don’t put your account on hold.

Netflix allows you to suspend your subscription for up to 10 months without paying any extra charges. To do so, you can go to your “Account Settings”>> “Cancel Membership.” Keep in mind that if you leave your account untouched for more than ten months, all your information will disappear.

24. Ditch The Netflix Algorithm for Even Better Movie Recommendations (From Humans to Humans)

While Netflix is an excellent streaming service, its recommendation system is far from perfect. Very very far, actually. But not all is lost if you have a Movvio account.
